A low monthly rental can look attractive, but it may not be the total amount you pay when a new broadband connection is installed. The first bill can include equipment, installation, advance rental and other location-specific charges. Before making a payment, compare the complete first-month cost—not only the headline plan price.
Monthly rental is only one part of the cost
Broadband plans are usually promoted using a monthly rental and an advertised speed. That information is useful, but the amount due at the beginning may be higher. Depending on the ISP, plan and address, the initial payment may include several one-time or refundable items.
Charges that may appear in the first month
- Plan rental: The monthly or multi-month charge for the selected package.
- GST or other applicable taxes: Confirm whether the advertised price includes or excludes tax.
- Installation or activation: Some offers waive this charge, while others apply it separately.
- Router or ONU: Equipment may be included, rented, sold or covered by a refundable deposit.
- Security deposit: Ask whether it is refundable and what conditions apply.
- Extra cable and internal wiring: Charges may apply beyond the standard cable length or for work inside the premises.
- Advance rental: The ISP may request one month, several months or a longer package payment in advance.
Ask for a written breakup
Before paying, request a quotation or message that clearly shows every charge. It should identify the plan, speed, billing period, tax, installation fee, equipment terms, deposit, cable allowance and total amount payable. If an item is refundable, ask how and when the refund is processed.
Check the plan terms as well as the price
- Is the advertised speed stated as “up to” a certain level?
- Is there a fair usage policy or high-speed data limit?
- What happens to speed after the limit is reached?
- Is there a minimum commitment period?
- What is the process for relocation, plan change, cancellation or equipment return?
- Who will issue the invoice and provide service support?
Prices and promotional offers can change, and two nearby buildings can have different installation requirements. Final charges should therefore come from the selected ISP after it confirms feasibility at the exact address.
Avoid these common mistakes
Do not make a payment only on the basis of a verbal promise, a forwarded poster or an old screenshot. Verify the payee, keep the receipt and preserve the written plan details. Do not assume that a free router means ownership; it may remain the ISP’s property and need to be returned when service ends.
